About

The theme of Hartmut Stockter’s work, is – in short – nature and observation. We see this in his sketchbooks as well as in the constructions and apparatuses he creates, which contain such insistent poetry, romantic desire, and awkward humour. His contraptions are designed to be used by an ‘Ausflügler’ (rambler) who is often out and about on rambles. These rambles have no specific purpose, they are without the urge to change, destroy or collect, but they are not merely an escape.

The Ausflügler finds little creatures exciting, and there are lots of them. He is not only out there for deer and rabbits, but also beetles and water fleas. Seeing a salamander up close can be quite jarring. When the Ausflügler is not rambling, perhaps he is sitting in his study, writing notes about walking across a building site, through stinging nettles or over to a puddle. When the Ausflügler is not rambling, he tends to be thinking up and building various apparatuses and devices to aid his rambling.

Of course, everyone knows that even the best devices can be more of a hindrance than a help: the underground periscope shows the viewer nothing but darkness; the smell-machine-bicycle cannot pick up the scent of flowers; and the sound of the whistling winds is drowned out by the noise of the mechanics. The machines get in the way, but their very existence expresses an irrepressible desire to approach nature in its own element. In this way, the artist reminds us of the importance of engaging with nature, preferably by rambling and best of all if in a puddle. In addition, all the pieces are created with such care and such an eye for detail that they stir our aesthetic curiosity and at the same time convince us of their necessity.
